Wedding Ring Profiles / Cross Sections and Terminology

If you are wondering what the difference is between multiple rings that appear the same to you, it can help look at the ring's profile. A ring profile is also known as a cross-section. Here's one way to think about it – imagine that you put a ring on a cutting board, chopped it in half, then looked at the exposed edge – that would be the profile.

Here are the profiles of our smooth bands:

Some notes on the differences between these rings:

Thickness: We generally recommend a thickness between 1.5-1.75mm for a wedding band. We find this to be the sweet spot between durability and comfort. Thinner than 1.5mm and the ring is more likely to bend or change shape over time, whereas over 1.75mm thick, the ring might feel too bulky between your fingers.

Simple Bands vs. Hand-carved: Another company makes all the rings that we call "Simple Bands" on a computer-operated lathe; essentially, a robot made them, so they are more perfect and regular. In contrast, we make the hand-carved bands. We start with carving wax for the hand-carved bands, then use the lost wax casting method to turn them into metal. So they will have subtle irregularities and more of a handmade look and a softer feel.

Comfort-fit: Rings 1.5mm or thicker can have a comfort-fit interior. Comfort-fit means that there is some amount of rounding on the inside of the band. The amount of rounding varies from style to style. A comfort-fit makes it easier to get the ring over the knuckle and reduces the surface area on your finger.

Comfort-fit Flat vs. Edgeless Bands: These styles have a flat face and a rounded comfort-fit interior. But with the Edgeless Band, we have also rounded that outer corner, giving it a softer look. Also, many people find these more comfortable between the fingers than those with the 90-degree outer corner. Flat bands are sometimes referred to as pipe cut.

Classic Bands: A Classic Band has a rounded exterior and a flat or comfort-fit interior. These are typically thought of as a traditional wedding band. Classic bands are also referred to as half-round or low-dome.

Arched Band: The profile of this ring lives between the flat and the classic bands. It is more domed than a flat band but not as domed as a classic band. Perfect for someone who is looking for a subtly rounded band.
